The 990 EVO 1TB is a hybrid-interface NVMe SSD: it negotiates PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2 depending on the host motherboard, both of which yield the same rated performance of up to 5,000MB/s sequential read and 4,200MB/s sequential write. It uses Samsung's V-NAND TLC flash in an M.2 2280 form factor.

Unlike Samsung's higher-end Pro-series drives, the 990 EVO uses a DRAM-less controller design (Samsung's Piccolo S4LY022 controller) that relies on Host Memory Buffer (HMB) — borrowing a small amount of system RAM — instead of onboard DRAM cache, keeping cost down at some expense of peak random-IO consistency versus a DRAM-equipped drive.

Note that despite some retail listings and the group name referencing 'PCIe 5.0', this is not a full PCIe 5.0 x4 drive — it is the dual-mode Gen4x4/Gen5x2 model, distinct from a true next-generation PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD.
