Unlike higher-end Samsung drives, the 980 omits an onboard DRAM cache. Instead it relies on Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, borrowing a small portion of the host system's RAM to hold mapping tables, which keeps costs down while Samsung's Pablo controller and 128-layer TLC V-NAND still deliver sequential speeds rated up to 3,500MB/s read and 3,000MB/s write across the 500GB and 1TB capacities.
